In a significant development for Sri Lanka’s Fairtrade sector, a stakeholders’ meeting was recently held in Colombo in December 2024, organised by the Export Development Board (EDB) and the Fairtrade Network of Asia Pacific Producers (NAPP), Sri Lanka. The meeting aimed to discuss the main projects currently executing, future of Fairtrade in Sri Lanka, issues pertaining to the sector and its expanding international presence. The event brought together high-level representatives from various Sri Lankan and international Fairtrade organisations, including EDB Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mangala Wijesinghe; Director General C.D. Dharmasena; Fairtrade NAPP Chief Operating Officer Bindu Sukumarapillai; Regional General Manager for South Asia Subhra Tudu; Fairtrade Original Netherlands Development Manager Martin Boon and, key stakeholders from Government institutions such as the Department of Commerce, Sri Lanka Tea Board, Coconut Development Authority, National Craft Council, Department of Agriculture and Industrial Technology Institution also participated, demonstrating broad support from both the public and private sectors. The main focus of the meeting was the Framework of Cooperation (FoC) – an agreement designed to strengthen Fairtrade networks, expand market access for Sri Lankan Fairtrade products, and enhance collaboration between Sri Lanka and international Fairtrade bodies. The FoC aims to promote Sri Lanka’s Fairtrade-certified products, including tea, coconut-based goods, spices, and handicrafts in global markets. The Framework of Cooperation (FOC) is a platform where participants could raise their concerns that require Government attention to help recovery, promote sustainability, and boost the export of Fairtrade products. The EDB, as the primary signatory for Sri Lanka, is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the FoC. The agreement, which received Cabinet approval in December 2023, was formally signed in January 2024. The initiative is expected to boost Sri Lanka’s exports, align with global sustainability goals, and improve trade terms for local producers. Sri Lanka’s Fairtrade-certified products have seen increasing demand, particularly in the European Union (EU), due to their sustainable production practices and the ethical treatment of workers. Products such as tea, spices, and handicrafts are now highly sought after, as consumers in developed markets look for goods that reflect sustainability and corporate responsibility. In 2022, Sri Lanka’s Fairtrade-certified exports generated approximately Euro 1 million. With 72 export companies and nearly 28,000 farmers involved in Fairtrade production, the country is well-positioned for further growth in the global market. The meeting underscored the importance of Fairtrade in promoting sustainable development. By ensuring fair wages, better working conditions, and improved market access, Fair trade helps reduce poverty while supporting both social and environmental sustainability. The initiative also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering a win-win scenario for producers and consumers alike. In his keynote address, the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) Chairman emphasised the country’s growing recognition as a reliable source of ethically produced goods. “Sri Lanka is gaining a reputation for ethical trade, and we expect more producers to adopt Fairtrade standards as global demand continues to grow,” he stated. Looking ahead, the Framework of Cooperation (FoC) is expected to increase Sri Lanka’s Fairtrade exports, particularly to the EU, by diversifying product offerings and expanding market access. The initiative is also anticipated to provide significant socio-economic benefits, especially for small-scale producers across the country. (I was born in 1971, so I’m classic Gen X, but you get my drift.) I hold my tongue. But I cannot help but compare this to what I was listening to at his age. What was I listening to? Music that protested against poverty and injustice. Music that demanded change, demanded that we part with our cash because people were starving in Africa. Forty years ago today: The assembled artists of Band Aid who collaborated on Do They Know It’s Christmas? Today, November 25, marks the 40th anniversary of the moment that the biggest names in British and Irish pop music joined forces as Band Aid to record Do They Know It’s Christmas? The song went straight to No.1 in 14 countries, raising millions in aid in the first year of sales. I recently reflected on the impact of this historic event on my 13-year-old self when I had the very great fortune to be part of a small audience with Band Aid’s instigator, Bob Geldof. Seated comfortably in a venue overlooking the Harbour Bridge, I listened as the world-renowned activist and rocking global changemaker told us how he had rallied the stars of the music industry to raise awareness and funds for victims of an Ethiopian famine that had occurred between 1983 and 1985. I sat on the edge of my seat, fangirling with tears in my eyes as he told us how the pop stars I loved as a teenager eagerly gave up their time for the cause; how his young mate, Bono, needed some persuasion as he didn’t feel like he was a star of the calibre of Elton John and Duran Duran. He told us how Wham’s now iconic Last Christmas single was due for release on the same day as Band Aid’s charity single, so George Michael not only agreed to delay the release, but also donated all the proceeds from his song to the Band Aid cause. The day the song was released – December 7, 1984 – I took my paper-run money to Brashs record store and bought my first seven-inch vinyl single. At home, it spun on repeat on the turntable. It was a formative moment for me. All my idols were involved in this project. All the artists and musicians I admired joined in an act of selflessness that was the outward display of their social conscience. Idols, role models, are important to young people. Their behaviour shapes the thinking of a young mind and helps construct a worldview. Loading At the risk of sounding like the Boomer I am not, I sometimes wonder whether Gen Z misses out here. I wonder why the same social conscience is no longer evident in popular music. Perhaps it’s because those British and Irish pop icons who sang for Africa – now described as Boomers – were only one generation away from those who witnessed the horror of World War II. The despair and disgrace of the Vietnam War was in their living memory. At the same time, the Cold War gave us all fear of annihilation. Globalisation and mass media gave us knowledge of the deprivation of the Third World while the West enjoyed wealthy lives. So of course, Sting was singing about disarmament of the two superpowers and U2 about violence, conflict and Ireland’s Troubles. And Midnight Oil sang about politics, consumerism, Indigenous disadvantage and the threat of nuclear war. I listened to music made by these bands and artists, and they knew how to “feed the world”, to shake things up. Pretty sure when Taylor Swift suggests you Shake It Off , she’s not inviting you to disrupt. And Sabrina Carpenter isn’t demanding an end to child labour in coffee production in Espresso . I’m not claiming that the desire for social upheaval isn’t expressed in indie rock, pop and rap. It’s just that the mainstream music doesn’t fly that flag any more. Relationships, sexuality and the industry itself provide plenty of material, but songs about overthrowing the system do not get many plays on the streaming services. So, my Gen Z child’s playlist is on rotation as we drive, and Kendrick Lamar is dissing Drake again: “I hate the way that you walk, the way that you talk, I hate the way that you dress.” Ouch. I can’t see those two making a charity record together any time soon. I guess if Gen Z are looking for warriors of social justice to model themselves on, they will have to look elsewhere. Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 10th minute from the penalty spot, finding the back of the net for the 100th time in the Champions League, and he joined Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as the only players to score a century of goals in the competition. Dani Olmo scored the Spanish side's second of the game in the 66th minute after receiving the ball inside the penalty area after a square cross from Gerard Martin , and the goalscorer's danced past centre-back Brendan Chardonnet before firing his shot off of Brest goalkeeper Marco Bizot and into the net. Lewandowski scored his side's third of the match in second-half stoppage time when he collected a driven pass into the penalty area from Alex Balde with one touch, before stroking the ball into the bottom-right corner with his second touch. The result means that Barca are now second with 12 points from their five outings in the Champions League and are just one point from first-placed Inter Milan. Meanwhile, Brest are ninth with 10 points but have the same amount of points as every team above them up until fifth-placed Bayer Leverkusen. Barca's Polish striker was awarded a penalty in the opening stages of the game when he was clattered by Brest goalkeeper Bizot after Dani Olmo crossed into the box, and Lewandowski calmly converted following a stuttered run up. While Martin's low delivery was excellent for Olmo's goal, the attacker deserves most of the credit given his close control inside the penalty area, though Bizot should have done better given the ball bounced off him and into the back of the net. Lewandowski demonstrated his immense composure in the box when he scored his second of the game, with the striker shielding the ball before swivelling his body and striking home. Brest goalkeeper Marco Bizot bizarrely fouls Robert Lewandowski when trying to claim a cross, and the Barca striker calmly converts the resulting penalty, slotting the ball to the right side of the net! Gerard Martin fires a low cross to Dani Olmo, who takes the ball while charging into the box, and his close control allows him to beat centre-back Brendan Chardonnet before he shoots at goal, scoring despite his effort striking goalkeeper Bizot! Alex Balde picks up the ball on the left of Brest's penalty area and finds Lewandowski in the box, and the striker controls the ball on his right foot in a central position before he swivels his hips and gently guides the ball into the bottom-right corner! Robert Lewandowski might be into his mid thirties, but the legendary striker proved once again that he still has so much to offer, scoring his 100th Champions League goal. Perhaps more impressive was the Polish striker's general play, with the forward always presenting himself as an option for teammates. The 36-year-old might no longer be the quickest, but he displayed his intelligence in and around the box against Brest, and the veteran was still able to contribute positively to Hansi Flick 's intense out of possession system.
